Reset of MMSI for DSC and AIS radios

[vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1697600274236{margin-top: 35px !important;margin-bottom: 35px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text]Radio manufacturers are required to produce radios that conform to the specifications, which demand that the user cannot change the MMSI without “advice from the manufacturer.” That is the FCC regulation, so it is not surprising that simple or well-known work-arounds have not been discovered. The FCC only has jurisdiction over the United States.  However, it is easier for manufacturers to build devices to a single specification.  It is likely that all radios sold worldwide are designed to meet the major specs if at all possible simultaneously.  That means that even so you bought a boat or radio in Europe your MMSI number is likely not changeable either.

Standard Horizon MMSI reset

Some manufactures like Standard Horizon have implemented software in a way that end users can change the MMSI information as needed.  In the case of Standard Horizon you simply need to use the menu interface and obtain a value from a menu called USER MMSI RESET followed by the key named REQUEST CODE.

Than email the reset code to the manufacturer and the support department (or some widget) will respond with a reset code.  Enter the code and you can afterwards enter your new MMSI number.  This only works on some models and with a minimum software revision.  So first verify your radio is supported and than either retrieve the code or upgrade the firmware as needed prior retrieving the code.

Other manufacturers may use hidden menus that can be accessed using a jumper inside the microphone or by pushing one or more buttons during Radio Programming Cablespower on.   Icom and others can be reset using a data/cloning cable and specialized model specific software running on Windows.

I carry a wide variety of cloning cables on board of Maya.  Please contact me if you need your VHF or AIS device reset to either erase your old MMSI number prior selling your radios or to enter a new MMSI number after you purchased the radio or vessel.

The repair cost for most devices is around $75 to $100USD if you drop off your device at our boat.   The usual turn-around time is about 1-2 days but may be longer if I need to obtain model specific software for your device.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
